INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL

JURISDICTION AND CHILDREN IN ARMED CONFLICT

The Course intends to develop the skills of academia and legal professionals in the field of international justice on issues related to children affected by armed conflicts. It aims at bringing conceptual clarity to the issue of children and justice in times of armed conflict by analysing the evolution of the rights of children, the relevant legal provisions and the current status of the practice at the international level. The Course will focus on the phenomenon of children in armed conflict and present the legal basis for the protection of children in Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law and International Criminal Law. Specific attention will be given to the crimes committed against and affecting children, including sexual and gender-based crimes, as well as to the sociological and psychological approach to children affected by armed conflict.

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE

The Course is coordinated by Professor Laura GUERCIO and Counsel Paolina MASSIDDA.

It will be held in English daily from 9 until 13 June 2025 with sessions each morning from 9:30 am until 13:00 pm CET and 2 afternoon sessions from 2:30 pm until 4:30 pm CET dedicated to two thematic workshops.

The sessions will consist of lectures followed by discussions through questions and answer sessions aiming at stimulating interaction among participants. Leading international experts and practitioners with experience in national and international proceedings, including before international organizations, International Tribunals and the International Criminal Court will intervene as guest lecturers.

A maximum of 15 candidates will be admitted to attend the Course in person. Additionally, up to 20 candidates, particularly those residing outside of Italy, may be admitted to attend the Course online.

Following the course, opportunities for internships within the Network and scholarships for the most deserving candidates will be considered.
